Anna's Journal

Feb. 15th, 2008

Lately my number one obsession has been changing all my ways as best I can to “go green”, as so many people are calling it these days. As some of you might have experienced, this is a huge undertaking. It all started when I read Michael Pollen’s amazing book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma. Suddenly, I found myself avoiding the Kroger almost completely in favor of Whole Foods and especially, the local farmers market. I now have a regular gig there twice a month on Saturday mornings. I buy anything locally that I can. I buy home made soap from a lady named Linda, my dairy products from the local dairy and honey and eggs from James Gardner, who runs the market.

I ditched my dishwasher for two tubs in the sink and asked and received a push mower for our yard. (We’ll see how that goes in the spring). I think I will ask for a couple of native fruit trees to plant for my birthday on March 10th. My bicycle waits patiently for slightly warmer weather and our 24-foot RV is parked in the K-Mart parking lot with 4, FOR SALE signs on her. The plan is to sell her and buy the most fuel-efficient car we can find that will pull a small teardrop trailer instead.

Also, I have participated in my first “Cumberland River Compact” event of planting trees along the river. If you ever decide to pull encroaching non-native species out of the woods, I’d recommend gloves. (Also, if you decide to pick up trash along the roads or out of the rivers be sure to wear rubber gloves. You never know what you might find.)
There are many other things going on but I will stop here. I am busy preparing for a benefit concert for my friend Oro, who fell out of a tree, and for the Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis, next week.

Blessings to you all!
Anna
